Video guidelines
Length of Video Clips
Please do not upload any videos that are more than 7-8 minutes in length. If you have a longer clip, it will probably work better if you cut the clip into two separate parts and add it to the website in that way. Clips that are too long typically do not get viewed all the way to the end.
What file format is best?
Flash Files Work Best or Quicktime formats (Mpegs, MP4) are the best. We can also support H.264, Soreson or Mpeg 4.
Windows Media (.wmv) is supported, but sources are usually already heavily compressed and can have square artefacts/dropped frames after conversion.
Are there any formats you cannot take?
DivX (the commercial product), as opposed to XviD (the open source one) can produce clips that we can't import. Real Video (.rm) is not supported.
Is there a file limit to video posts?
Recommended bitrate is between 512 and 1024 kbit/s for all formats, so maximum file size is about 8Mb / min. There is a maximum 100Mb upload file size.
Video
Resolution Recommended: 1280 x 720 (16 x 9 HD) and 640 x 480 (4:3 SD)
As low as possible. Best quality is obtained by increasing bitrate and keyframes, not resolution.
If the movie is shot with a phone it is preferable to decrease resolution from max so as to allow the phone to not drop frames
If the movie is shot with a camera it is preferable to have a resolution as close as possible to our video player 626 px X 440 px
What format? (16:9 or 4:3)
Both are accepted by the encoder and player with no issues.
Some videos may not have the format set so our player will horizontally shrink a 16:9 video into a 3:4 format.
What file dimensions?
626 px X 440 px – this is for 4:3 format.
625 px X 351 px – this is for 16:3 Widescreen format.
