The Movenpick Hotel, Amsterdam

The 408 room Movenpick Hotel is located in the up-and-coming section of Amsterdam Harbour and is an architecturally beautiful building, standing 20-storeys over the waterfront and designed by Dutch firm Claus en Kaan. Although not the most central spot in Amsterdam - it is a good 15 minute walk from Centraal Station, but there is a free hourly shuttle service during the day – it is, without doubt, the hotel with the best views: from the top floor visitors get a spectacular view of Amsterdam’s busy harbour and the city skyline.

The Movenpick hotel is also a non-smoking hotel: smoking is banned throughout the hotel, including the rooms, with a €150 ‘cleaning’ fine imposed on those caught breaking the rules. The rooms, while not the largest, are excellent when compared to your average city centre hotel, and come equipped with all the usual amenities you would expect from a Movenpick Hotel, but the real attraction has to be the spellbinding view.

If like me you’ve had trouble sleeping in a hotel room due to the noise, either from the street outside or from noisy neighbours and slamming doors, you’ll be pleased to hear that the Movenpick Hotel is fantastically quiet. There is minimal noise, from inside or outside the hotel, making the rooms ideal for a well earned lie-in.

Other amenities include free wi-fi access and a well-equipped gym and spa. The hotel also has a great bar, offering a wide selection of drinks and cocktails, plus, if you are tired from sightseeing and fancy staying in, the Silk Road Restaurant, serves up a wide selection of Indian and Thai cuisine. Highly recommended though, is the Movenpick’s sumptuous buffet breakfast. Choose from a selection of pastries, cold meats and cheeses, fresh fruit and juices, plus an array of cooked foods, including bacon and eggs cooked to order. While the breakfast is not cheap at €20 per person, it will easily set you up for the day.

Price: Standard rooms from €149 per night (excluding 5% city tax)per night, check the website for special offers - www.moevenpick-hotels.com
